OpenCode, the free open source coding agent that just hit 2.0

In one line: OpenCode is a free, open source AI coding agent that writes and fixes code in your terminal, desktop, or IDE, with almost any AI model you pick.

What it is

OpenCode is an MIT-licensed coding agent from Anomaly. You describe a change, and it edits files and runs commands to get it done. It works with 75+ model providers (Claude, GPT, Gemini, local models), and you can log in with a GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT Plus/Pro plan you already pay for. Version 2.0 shipped this week: one background service powers the terminal, desktop, and web apps, subagents can run in the background, and a new Code Mode chains MCP tools in one script. It has 208K+ GitHub stars.

Who it's for

Devs who want a Claude Code-style agent without model lock-in, founders on a tight budget, and creators who want help with scripts or a site.

Try this today

Install it from opencode.ai with curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/v2/install | bash, or grab the desktop app. In a project folder, run opencode, pick a model with /connect, and ask: "Explain how this project fits together, then list three small bugs to fix first."

The catch

The agent is free, but strong models usually aren't. A few free models are included. Beyond those, you pay your own provider or use OpenCode's: Go is $10/month (Go Plus $40/month) for open models, and Zen is pay-as-you-go from a $20 balance. On 1.x? Old plugins don't run in 2.0.
